Police arraign houseboy for stealing boss’ $10,000: The police have arraigned one Isidor Ajao, before an Igbosere Magistrate’s Court, Lagos State, for allegedly stealing $10,000 (1.7m) from his boss’ brief case which was said to contain S35,000. It was learnt that Ajao, who hails from Cotonou in the Benin Republic, had been serving as a house help of one Savage, a resident on Olori Mojisola Street, Ikoyi, Lagos State until he committed the alleged crime. It was said that the defendant gave the money to his brother, who fled to Cotonou afterwards. After prodding by the boss, 29-year-old Ajao reportedly confessed to the crime and briefed him on how to locate his brother in Cotonou. Our correspondent further gathered that the boss travelled to Cotonou and recovered N1.3m from Ajao’s brother. The money was said to have been exchanged to Benin Republic’s currency before it was recovered. The matter was reported to the policemen at the Ikoyi Police Station, who arrested the house help and arraigned him before Mrs. A.F.O. Botoku on two counts bordering on stealing. The charges read, “That you, Isidor Ajao, and others now at large, on August 19, 2014, at about 15.30 hours, on Olori Mojisola Street Ikoyi Lagos in the Lagos Magisterial District did conspire to commit felony to wit; stealing and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria. “That you on the same date, time and place, in the aforementioned magisterial district, did steal $10,000, equivalent to N1.7m, property of one Savage and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 285(1) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2011.” The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the offence. Botoku admitted him to bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties each in the like sum. “The sureties must also provide their tax clearance and their addresses must be verified by the prosecutor. However, if the defendant is truly from Benin Republic, a letter from the country’s embassy in Nigeria should be presented and verified.” The case was adjourned till September 10, 2014. primechronicle/?p=12158
