Police arrest three men for sorcery on Nissan Island Source: The National, Friday August 30th, 2013 THREE men have been arrested for sorcery on Nissan Island in the Autonomous Region of Bougainville. The islanders had accused the three of sorcery which led to a fight and unrest on the island. Buka police station commander Chief Sgt Alex Gunnan said five officers were sent to Nissan Island to assist the two policemen stationed there after reports of the unrest reached them. The three were arrested after a three-week investigation and brought to Buka yesterday. Nissan Island is a one-day journey by boat from Buka. Gunnan said the three were still being questioned at the Buka police station. He said it was likely that they would be charged with attempted murder. “The three men were accused of practising sorcery on another person and a fight broke out, creating tension on the island,” Gunnan said. “The police from Buka were deployed and with the help of Nissan Island policemen, normalcy was restored within the island community.” Gunnan also commended the Bougainville community for their good behaviour during the recent celebrations of the Autonomous Region of Bougainville at Arawa town recently. “I would like to thank the general community for their good behaviour that resulted in peaceful celebrations that were held for the four days of the event. “It was generally peaceful and no major incidents were reported,” Gunnan said.
