Police brutality is the hot button issue of the day. While I agree - TopicsExpress

Police brutality is the hot button issue of the day. While I agree its an important conversation to have, its very important to see both sides of the issue. Black lives matter, yes. The life of ANY person matters. But we cant forget that cops lives are included in that. I dont say this to back up the actions of the officers involved in the MO and NY cases. I say this because its important to step into the shoes of police officers. Their lives are on the line every day. They are trained to perform quick takedowns of suspects. They take no chances if someone even appears to have a weapon on them. Even if they dont have a weapon, its possible to kill a person with your bare hands. They are taught to subdue as quickly as possible. And why is that? Because criminals do not usually give police any warning if they intend to do them harm. This video is the perfect example. A man beats the snot out of a cop that pulled him over right in front of his daughter. Did he give any warning he was about to do that to this officer? If she had used lethal force to get him off of her, should she be indicted? Its a medical fact that even one well placed punch can kill a person. Thats the reason this mans crime is assault. Doesnt matter if he knocked down and repeatedly punched a cop, his wife, a buddy, or some stranger at a bar...doesnt matter what race he is or what the race is of the person he is punching...this is assault, its a crime, and it can kill or seriously injure someone. Hell, a local high school football player suffered horrible brain damage after suffering a beating from two other students. He almost died. He didnt, but his life and brain/motor functions have been changed forever. Unarmed people can kill. Cops dont take that fact lightly when it could mean the end of their own lives, and theres no way a cop could know who will attack them and exactly when. As I said, this is an important conversation to have. The lives of Michael Brown, Eric Garner, and others like them absolutely matter. But the conversation seems pretty one sided at the moment. Police willingly put themselves in danger to protect and serve civilians in their communities who, at the moment, are getting bottles thrown at them from angry civilians thanks to the possible excessive actions of a handful of police officers in two American cities. Perhaps police procedures should be examined and altered...and I personally believe Eric Garners death could have, and SHOULD have been avoided...but encounters like the one in this video clip are exactly why police are trained NOT to take any chances. Sooo...taking a fair look at both sides of the issue...where do we all go from here?
