Police in Blackface Black Petes will act as bodyguards for Sinterklaas during the parade in the Netherlands this year. This is what Patricia Schor has to say about it: NEWS FROM THE NETHERLANDS: POLICE(WO)MEN WILL ACCOMPANY THE SINTERKLAAS PARADE DISGUISED AS BLACKFACE (ZWARTE PIET). The obvious assumption here is that critics of blackfacing in the NL are a threat to public order. If only... we would have a ground to have the Sinterklaas defilé cancelled, according to the criteria for granting the permit to the parade. And then the implications of this policy in terms of the securitization of public space are several and grave. Beware that this policing practice is fed by an already marked subject recognised as a threat to the State, and this subject is Black or coloured (and thus: racial profiling). However, ZWARTE PIET AS THE WHITE GUARDIAN OF PUBLIC ORDER IN DISGUISE is not new.
