Police in Northamptonshire are seeing an increase in the number of reported incidents of what is called ‘webcam blackmail,’ and are advising people to take simple steps to prevent falling victim to online blackmailers. Webcam blackmail is a relatively new type of crime, and usually involves people being lured into taking off their clothes in front of their webcam. Soon afterwards, they are told this has been recorded and the video will be posted online and even shown to the victim’s contacts - unless a fee is paid. This is usually a substantial sum of money.
