Political corruption is the abuse of office by elected or appointed government officials. It can take many forms, but is most often used to characterize situations where an official has exchanged favors related to their office in return for personal gain. That gain sometimes involves cash payments directly to the individual—which leaves the official open to tax evasion charges should the exchange come to light—or in the form of campaign donations.
