Politicians have unfortunately made the case that if anyone has a modicum of money, then they are for some reason not a genuine refugee and therefore an economic Migrant. This labelling has unfairly painted these people as less deserving of help. People with money can face persecution the same as those who do not have any money. People with money need to flee persecution to protect their family just the same as those who do not. If other avenues of escaping are closed off, then they will take advantage of any avenue that opens to them, the same ad anyone else who wants to save their family would. There are no ordered queues in a lot of refugee camps. How do we judge the success of boarder protection policy? By keeping out all asylum seekers and sending them to Papua New Guinea and Nauru and Christmas Island etc. It is a fact that over 90 percent of asylum seekers after being assessed are found to be genuine. Those trying to arrive by boat pale into insignificance compared to illegal immigrants who fly in over stay their visas. They are the illegal ones. It is not illegal to seek asylum and it is not illegal to seek any method of transportation to arrive at the country they are seeking refuge in. It is such a shame that a great deal of the turn back the boats policy lacks compassion and decency toward our fellow human beings in need.
