Politicians like to give us false choices so they can try and shape our reasoning in ways that will protect their position of power. Don’t believe it. Of most recent note: 1. Govt lawyers create the Patriot Act to leverage authoritarian means around its own restrictions in the 4th amendment. 2. The govt then steps up its methods used to spy on US citizens. 3. The govt is exposed for their acts. 4. The immediate reasoning the govt gives is “Its good for you, because it protects you” 5. As that is further investigated, the govt. then moves to the 2nd level of reasoning. The President explains it’s a “modest encroachment” on our liberty. To be safer is to have less liberty, you can’t have both. 6. At this point, you reach the 3rd level of reasoning, that exposes this logic is indeed a false choice. R Paul’s quote frames this: “Perhaps instead of treating every American as a potential terror suspect, the government should concentrate on more targeted analysis and an analysis that doesn’t violate the Bill of Rights.” 7. Prepare for the 4th level of reasoning by government: Despite its question of popularity, govt lawyers say that its now legal, thus it will be done. Now the people must muster political support to “change the law” in order to have the law “revert” back to something that was once considered a cornerstone freedom to this nation’s laws.
