Polluted water used to make famous Maotai wine in China Maotai wine has been named as the national liquor in China. Yet, it have been discovered that water used in its manufacture actually comes from the polluted Chishui River (赤水河) in Renhuai, Guizhou province. The river is badly contaminated by the untreated sewage from the hundreds of breweries nearby. According to one investigative reporter, the source of the pollution is Kweichow Moutai Company, a state-owned enterprise in China, specializing in the production and sale of Maotai liquor. However, the firm blamed the pollution on other breweries. Maotai has been certified as an organic product even though Chinese media reports uncovered high levels of pesticides are used in the milo (sorghum) fields, from where the main ingredients come. Samples of river water and pesticides were collected by the reporter but were later confiscated by the police. The reporter was then detained and questioned for more than ten hours. Most of the evidence collected was destroyed. The scandal is expected to impact on sales of the product and the companys stock price. #adminAKOPINOY
