Poor Funding: NASU Threatens To Resume Strike!!! The Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) of the National Institute for Sports (NISport) Lagos, on Saturday threatened to resume its strike which was earlier called off in May. Christian Esonu, the Secretary NISport NASU, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that the union went on strike in February before it was called off in May. He said government showed interest in the peaceful protest but was yet to attend to the union’s demands. “We called off the strike in May to give the government enough time to meet with our requirements, but then government is yet to respond to our demands. “The nine-week duration ends this week and I fear that we might not have a choice but to go back to the strike we temporarily called off,” he said. The secretary said among their demands was the regular funding of research institutes in the country. “For instance, the government has completely neglected funding the institute of researches. How can a research institute grow if it does not have funds to carry out researches,” he stressed. The secretary said that the union would resume its strike to press home its demands. Esonu said although the strike crippled activities in the institute, painful processes had to be adopted for positive changes to take place. (NAN)
