Pope Francis visit to Turkey drew attention not only to Turkish Christians, but also something lurking beneath the surface. In Turkey, there was a time when Christians made up 20% of the population, but government oppression brought it down to about 1% over time. Turkey has tried making up for past decisions in recent years, but change like that takes time. Also, while Islam v Christianity may not be as large a fight in Turkey as it is in much of the Middle East...a group of violent ultra-nationalists who were once linked to an assassination attempt on Pope John Paul II have been relentless in their attempts to eliminate Christianity in Turkey.
