Poppa Terry’s Words of Wisdom #204: The Baseball Gods and Kansas City Mojo 1) This seems to have all started on August 2, 2013, when 16 year old Lorde from New Zealand released with the song “Royals”. 2) She penned the song, inspired by a National Geographic picture of George Brett. He was surrounded by a horde of fans, smiling and signing a multitude of baseballs. 3) The Baseball Gods looked kindly on this song and event and the Royals had their first winning season in 2013 for the first time in a decade. 4) Harken back to 1985, the Royals won their only World Series against “Arch” Rivals, the St. Louis Cardinals. 5) Hey Cards Fans, Denkinger made the right call....lol 6) And all Cards fans conveniently forget that the Royals won game seven 11-0 in 1985..... 7) Yet, it seems since that time the Baseball Gods banished the Royals to “Baseball Purgatory’ for the next 29 years, while the Cardinals kept on doing they’ve done since the beginning of time....win....dammit.... 8) Purgatory (definition) according to Catholic Church doctrine, is an intermediate state after physical death in which those destined for heaven undergo purification, so as to achieve the holiness necessary to enter the joy of heaven. 9) The Baseball Gods have determined the Royals are now purified and Kansas City has found its Mojo again. 10) As in 1985, the Royals have two birds ahead of them. 11) In 1985, they were Blue Jays and the Cardinals. 12) This year, they Royals have Orioles and we are hoping for the Cardinals again.... 13) The Chant “Let’s Go Royals!” will be heard from households, bars, and Kauffman Stadium loud enough for the Baseball Gods to smile again on Kansas City! 14) So, like a kid at Christmas, I am anxiously looking forward to the next two weeks. 15) And, I plan to watch the Royals, go to Sunday Mass and maybe even Confession, so I can be purified, like my Royals..... Have a great and safe Columbus Day Weekend! Oh, by the way, the City of Seattle will not be celebrating Columbus Day. The Seattle City Council is replacing Columbus Day with “Indigenous Peoples Day” in the city. I am serious about this – they really did. Upon hearing this, the City Council of Kansas City enacted a law to no longer celebrate Saint Patrick’s Day on March 17. Its being changed to Saint Mohawk Kateri Tekakwithas Day, the first Native American saint. Lol Congrats to my niece Erin Kolster to Barry “Flippin” Jones. They were married yesterday in Las Vegas. Erin wore a beautiful long white dress, while Barry wore an even more beautiful Royals T-Shirt...seriously, he did... Thoughts and Prayers to the Everett Hannon family on the loss of his mother, Margie. Take care and Go Royals! ;-) Poppa Terry
