Popular Drummer - Steve Smith Born on August 21, 1954 in Whitman, Massachusetts, Smith observed curiosity in drums on hearing marching bands through parades in his hometown as a child. He obtained his 1st drum kit at two decades outdated. In 1963, at an early age of nine, he started learning the drums with a community teacher, Bill Flanagan, who had his share of taking part in in big bands in the swing era. He had his initially genuine drum set at twelve. As a teenager, Smith performed in the college band program and garage bands. His very first paid gig was with a garage band. He later played in a skilled Brockton concert band and in the major band at the nearby college, Bridgewater State School. Smith went on to research audio at the Berklee College of New music in Boston, exactly where realized underneath renowned teachers, Gary Chaffee and Alan Dawson. The band planned a subsequent tour following the results of their album having said that, Steve Perry sustained a hip injury, so the band determined to appear for a new vocalist. It was while in this time that Smith also made a decision to depart the band. Steve Smiths explosive solos obtained him a great deal acclaim.
