Population Council Holds Dialogue on HIV/AIDS and Young People In a bid to improve young people’s participation in advocacy for the implementation of youth friendly HIV programs and services in Nigeria, the Population Council Nigeria is organizing a National Multi-stakeholder Dialogue in Abuja on Wednesday April 2, 2014. The Population Council, is an international, non-profit, non-governmental organization that confronts critical health and development issues-from stopping the spread of HIV to improving reproductive health and ensuring that young people lead full and productive lives. Through biomedical, social science, and public health research in 50 countries, they work with partners to deliver solutions that lead to more effective policies, programs, and technologies that improve lives around the world. The dialogue, which will bring together youth advocates aged 15 to 24 years, policy makers and program implementers in the health sector, will also be held online simultaneously. Online participants can participate by tweeting their questions or comment using the hash-tag #walkthetalk14 and @PopCouncil. According to Raphael Nnakwe, Youth Program Assistant, Population Council Nigeria, panellists and participants will interact through a question and answer discussion session where participants’ inquiries and concerns will be addressed by panellists during the programme. Questions from online participants will also be relayed to the panellists and their responses will equally be made available online to ensure every participant is carried along. The panel includes Dr. Babatunde Ahonsi (Population Council), Ms. Sylvia Ekponimo (Education as a Vaccine - EVA), Mr. Arjan de Wagt (UNICEF), Prof. O.A. Ladipo (Association for Reproductive and Family Health - ARFH), Dr. Emmanuel Alhassan (National Agency for the Control of AIDS - NACA), Dr. Yinka Falola-Anoemuah (NACA), Prof. Friday Okonofua (Ford Foundation), Mr. David Ajagun (Federal Ministry of Health), and Mrs. Biddy Offiah (Federal Ministry of Education) and Dr. Nasser El-Kholy (UNFPA).. ‘This programme is organized to give opportunity to young people to ask necessary questions and hold policy makers accountable for their policies on HIV/AIDS. There is a need to also increase awareness and ensure the continuous education of young people on the disease.’ Nnakwe said. This programme holds between 10am and 1pm on April 2, 2014 and online participants can participate as follows: Facebook: #walkthetalk14, Population Council Nigeria Twitter: @Pop_CouncilNG, #walkthetalk14 theclip.org/article/population-council-holds-dialogue-hivaids-and-young-people# Cc: Petra Onyegbule, Auwal Anwar, Nasir Yammama, Gimba Kakanda, Safiya Musa
