Population pyramids by country, going back to 1950. One can easily read the (economic) history of a country by looking at the pyramid: -Very poor countries (eg. Mauritania or Chad) will have a smooth cone, thick at the bottom and thin at the top. This is because people die early and often and high childbirth numbers are needed for survival. Also note the Rwandan pyramid, the dents in it are caused by war. -So-so poor countries (say Bolivia) still have a sharp cone but people die less so it grows less thin at the top. -Richer third-world countries have interesting demographical dynamics. Take a look at Egypt. There is a small bulge of people born 25-29 years ago. The child mortality rates decreased due to better infrastructure and less general retardedness of the population, which caused more survivors. Note that the fertility rate of the population went down afterwards: people get less children if their income is high enough (but more children if it rises further). Those are the youngsters who perpetrated the Arab Spring: a large contingent of schooled unemployed youth, that ironically only survived because of Mubaraks reforms, went against him. -China is a special example. You can see two bulges: One of people born 45-49 years ago, when hunger definitely ended in the country. Those were the unruly youngsters who did Tiananmen. The second bulge is of people born 25-29 years ago, a result of massive industrial and agricultural investment and the allowance for foreign capital to enter country. -Eastern Bloc countries have a bulge of people born around the time of economic reforms and more liberal economics: there was more production and families could afford more children. -First World countries like Belgium have had their bulges decades ago, so the pyramids are inverted: yup, were paying for all the grandpas in ten years from now. -Take a look at the Arab States!
