Portfolio reviews went well today. Five reviewers, five different opinions but what else would you expect. Critiques are such individual things. First the reasons for hope. One of the reviewers, as she was leaving, said that she wants us working together and will be in touch. She also said there were several prints in my portfolio that she is interested in adding to the gallery/museum collection. Ive got my fingers crossed on this one. It could be the break I am looking for. A second said she wants to help me hopefully break through the clutter by getting my work featured in some online media that she edits. Media exposure is what HONY got to break out online and that ultimately led to a #1 NYTimes bestseller. From my lips to Gods ears. Now for the feedback/suggestions. One person wanted to see more background detail (greater depth of field) in my street portraits while another wanted to see less background (shallower depth of field). I had some of both and probably need to pick one and stick with it. I was told by another reviewer that my prints looked too digital and among other things I need to back down on my sharpening and do more selective sharpening. I have already backed off so far since my landscape days but I can do more and be more selective. And yet another reviewer seemed to really like my compositions and focused on how I could make the prints more impactful by darkening backgrounds in order to make the subject stand out more. All things to think about and try. The good news is that my compositions seemed strong and I received several complements on my artistic/photographic eye. All in all, a morning well spent.
