Portumna Film Maker makes her Mark Last August the Connacht Tribune assisted Portumna documentary producer Aisling Ahmed’s request for help to find archive for her short documentary The End Of The Counter, which tells the story of the first self-service supermarkets coming to Ireland and what the end of the old ‘over-the-counter’ shops meant to the communities they served. One year on the 13minute film has now been completed and following successful screenings at Cork and Dublin International Film Festivals it will have its Galway premiere next week at the Galway Film Fleadh. Directed by Newbridge native Laura McGann the film features unique archive from the 1960’s that is bound to make you feel nostalgic and contributors include Midland 103FM’s Ricey Scully, a former shop-boy in Whites of Clara, Co. Offaly. A second short documentary produced by Aisling has also been selected to screen at the prestigious festival. Sparlo is a 30 minute short documentary which was co- produced with the Afghan producer Sultan Mohamad and his company Kuchi Films. Filmed & directed by Corkman Keith O’Shea who lived and worked in the country for a number of years, Sparlo is set in the Northern provinces of Afghanistan and brings the viewer in the world of the ancient game of Buzkashi, the national sport of Afghanistan. Played by master riders it is a fast and dangerous game often compared to polo, but with hands instead of mallets and a goat carcass instead of a ball. It is a fiercely competitive game and local rivalries & tensions often boil over, sound familiar? Aisling Ahmed said “As a local filmmaker I am very proud to be part of Galway Film Fleadh. Crow Hill Films is a new company and so to have our first two short films selected for the festival is a huge boost for us. The Fleadh is so highly regarded within the industry around the world we are thrilled to be part of the line-up” The End of the Counter & Sparlo were both made with the support of Bord Scannán na hÉireann/the Irish Film Board and will screen as part of the New Irish Shorts Documentary Programme in the Town Hall on Sunday 14th July at 10am To book tickets go to galwayfilmfleadh and more information and clips of the films can be found on crowhillfilms
