Possibly the strongest storm in recorded history, massive Super Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda) caused great devastation to the Philippines on November, 7, 2013. For those directly affected or have lost loved ones in this tragedy, there may be a heightened sense of vulnerability and/or feelings of fear, sadness, numbness, shock and grief. When members of the UH community experience these tragedies, it is important to remember how we are ALL impacted. As members of the Cougar community, we should all take part in helping each other through this most difficult time. We hope the following suggestions will help begin the healing process for all affected by this tragedy. Connect with Others Around You: Spending time with friends, family, or other groups who are willing/able to listen can be extremely helpful. Sometimes just being around others who are experiencing the same feelings can be comforting. Participate in Support Services: Many support services are available to provide you with spaces to care for your whole self. Campus Recreation can provide a space to care for the needs of your physical body and maintain health while the Wellness Center has a relaxation lab in which students may find some much needed relief and engagement in the practice of mindfulness. Counseling and Psychological Services is always available for imminent or to aid with managing distress or process concerns. Visiting with us at 226 Student Services Center 1 or during Let’s Talk for consultation can provide a space to discuss if you are caring for yourself and what, if any, needs may need more care at this time. Find Strength in Spiritual and Religious Faiths: If you have a spiritual community or a religious faith, gathering with others who share your same beliefs and/or practices can strengthen your connections to others as well as be a force of healing in both your life and the lives of others. You are not alone during this time of tragedy. Please contact UH Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) at 713.743.5454 or visit us on the second floor of Student Services Center 1 if you find yourself in crisis or are experiencing distress managing during this difficult time. Initial consultations are provided by same-day appointments, and walk-in crisis support is offered here at CAPS Monday & Tuesday from 8AM – 7PM and from 8AM – 5PM Wednesdays through Friday. If you have not been directly affected but looking for ways to help, below are a few options to consider. Philippines Red Cross: The Philippines Red Cross chapter currently has a website that people can visit and donate money to help with disaster relief or general care. Supertyphoon Yolanda (HAIYAN) or General donation are some of the options listed. Mobile Giving: The Mobile Giving Foundation has launched a text messaging campaign for micro-donations, and the four major U.S. mobile carriers, Verizon, AT&T, Sprint, and T-mobile, have waived text messaging fees for donations. To text your support: » Text HOPE to 777444 to donate $10.00 on behalf of World Vision » Text RELIEF to 864233 to donate $10.00 on behalf of UNICEF » Text RELIEF to 25383 to donate $10.00 to Catholic Relief Services
