Have a look at the photos of the EU-IOM Photo contest 2013 reflecting the positive and the negative consequences of Migration in Nepal. Marking the International Migration Day (yesterday), EU Ambassador to Nepal, H.E Rensje Teerink, reminded this morning that not only does migration require the cooperation of national governments, local authorities, civil society, migrants associations, the private sector and the international community; it also requires a multi-sector approach which addresses amongst others the human, social and labour rights of migrants, their psycho-social well-being, and the development effects as well as potential economic gains associated with migration. The NPC of Nepal with the support of international partners united under the banner of the Kathmandu Migration Group (KMG), and with support of the #EUinNepal, held the 2nd High Level Consultation to review areas of priority and identify a suitable approach to integrate migration in the development planning of the GoN through an inclusive process involving all national stakeholders and development partners. The positive role of remittances is officially acknowledged in the development of Nepal. The EU takes note of the challenges and opportunities that labour migration presents, and the necessary policy guidance to ensure effective main streaming of migration in Nepal’s development plans.
