Post #5 Every character needs at least one friend or family member—someone to bring out the best in them, or to help them through a rough patch or teach an important lesson. These characters usually pop onto the page as a surprise, and I had a lot of those surprises in Strange Birds. In fact, the only characters I knew before I started writing were Phil and Jerry. I didn’t even know Lee, and I sure didn’t know his mom and sister. Becca, Lee’s sister, was a fun character to write. Not only does she help their mom run an organic herb farm, she paints folk art, and has a special love for the circus (and her big brother :)). She also has Down syndrome. Becca is a true country girl, she works hard, plays hard, and loves hard. She surprised me when she stormed onto the page, angry at Lee for putting Bruce the dog into his pen. I just got out of her way and let her do what she needed to do. I can’t show other people’s folk art on this Page, but you can follow this link to my Pinterest board where I’ve hoarded some. This board also has the inspiration pic for SB (way down at the bottom), and a few bits and bobs I collected while writing. pinterest/charleydescote/the-nesting-habits-of-strange-birds/ I’m not as well-read as I’d like to be, but I haven’t seen many characters like Becca in Male-Male Romances. If you have, I’d love to get your book recs! If you don’t have one, you can name a kind of character you haven’t seen in an mm romance but would like to—as a supporting player or as an MC/LI. Maybe you’ve been looking for a hunky 7-foot fire fighter, a professional badminton player or an ESL teacher? Inquiring minds want to know (because it’s impossible to have too many people sharing my headspace, yeah? *lol*). Since the other two posts might not be easy to find, any answer to the question on this one will be counted toward both the coaster and an ebook copy of Strange Birds!
