Post surgery update and what we know now: When Kaity Mann - TopicsExpress

Post surgery update and what we know now: When Kaity Mann injured her knee last August she actually tore her semitendinosus tendon completely off the bone. The surgeon had to find it and dig it out to remove it. He also removed another tendon, I think her gracillis tendon, but Im not positive if thats the right one. Basically, Kaity experienced the most severe hamstring injury you can experience, it is a rare injury and therefore a rare surgery and there is no actual name for this surgery. Her other ligaments and tendons were severely inflamed and jacked up so he took out some other tissue and, as he out it, he had to completely re-injure her knee in order to repair it. One of the bursa sacs was also severely inflamed and red so he removed it. Everything that was removed was sent to pathology and he told me he didnt want to discuss anything further about the bursa sac or tissue and tendons until he sees the pathology report. That sounded a bit scary, but Im assuming that is normal procedure. He anticipated the surgery to be fairly easy and to take about 20 minutes. In the post-op consult he said it was much more severe than he anticipated. The surgery took over an hour. Her recovery will be at least two months. Crutches for however long she needs, could be 10 days or more than a month. As a mom, I now feel horrible that she has lived with this for a year!! I knew when the injured happened that it was bad, but nothing showed up on x-rays or mris. Weve seen this orthopedic dr 4 times this year and he hoped it would heal on its own. How can you know? And you dont want unnecessary surgery. Ftr, he is a phenomenal ortho surgeon and I would recommend him to anyone!! Again, this is a rare injury and not detectable like an acl or pcl injury. And Baylor Ortho hospital in arlington is wonderful place!! Thank you all for your prayers today!! We appreciate prayers for her recovery and for my patience in taking care of her. She cannot do anything on her own for the next several days. And shes hooked up to a very cool ice machine for the next 30 days. 72 hours continuously and then several hours a day for the remainder. So, lots of unhooking and rebooking when she has to get up. She is in a lot of pain today so prayers for her pain to quickly subside!
