Post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD, is not new, although it has been called different names throughout history. During the past 150 years it has been named shell shock, gas hysteria, battle fatigue, combat exhaustion, and compensation sickness. Maladies that sound remarkably like these more modern terms were described during the era of the Greeks and Romans. Shakespeare refers to them.
