PostDoc/Researcher Global Agriculture and Crop Modelling at PBL Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency, Potsdam and Wageningen, Netherlands The IMAGE model is a key instrument of PBL Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency for scenario analyses into the consequences of future demand for food and energy. Regarding food, model research focuses on the development of agricultural production, the use of natural resources and emissions of greenhouse gasses and nutrients. In the modelling of the global agricultural system, the crop, water and vegetation model LPJmL, coupled to IMAGE, plays a central part. In order to assess the potentials and limitations of increasing crop yields, you will carry out scenario assessments, and further develop the coupled IMAGE-LPJmL model for yield limiting factors and processes of intensification. For this you will work together with other researchers of the IMAGE model team, and partners in Potsdam and Wageningen. You will also participate in European and global assessments involving IMAGE for various projects. You are expected to (co-) publish your work both in PBL reports and peer reviewed journals. Requirements You have an MSc or higher qualification in agronomic - environmental sciences or a related study in the natural sciences. Essential is that you are conversant with natural resource use and the food and agricultural system, and you have a demonstrable quantitative understanding of these issues at the global scale; A PhD is an advantage, but not essential, and you have at least two years relevant work experience; You have extensive experience with modelling of the global agriculture-food-environmental system. You are able to read and modify model codes (Fortran and C). You have experience with analysing large, often spatially explicit, datasets. You are familiar with the strengths and weaknesses of modelling approaches; Experience with working in large, international teams and connections with international modelling and assessment networks is desirable; You are able to extract the essential information and messages from data intensive model assessments; The position demands good writing skills in English and requires that you published as a first author on the issue of modelling global agriculture, food and environment; You have experience with conducting your own research, but you also work well as part of a team. Salary Depending on education and experience, BBRA Scale 11 (max. Euro 4,380.72 gross per month) for a 36 hour working week. This temporary function is for a period of 1 year. About PBL The PBL Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency (PBL) is the national institute for strategic policy analysis in the fields of environment, nature and spatial planning. We contribute to improving the quality of political and administrative decision-making by conducting outlook studies, analyses and evaluations in which an integrated approach is considered paramount. Policy relevance is the prime concern in all our studies. We conduct solicited and unsolicited research that is always independent and scientifically sound. About KLE The Department of Climate, Air and Energy (KLE) analyses the effects of climate change, air pollution and energy scarcity on society. Looking at every scale – national, European and global – it carries out assessments of policies, both proposed and already in place, on how to mitigate and adapt to climate change, combat air pollution and realise a sustainable energy supply. It also studies scientific, economic and governance aspects of societal developments. This work is often based on integral quantitative analyses using various calculation models and a systems approach. Additional information Information about the content of the function: Ir. T.
