Posted For: Steve Mcd (The Man that found this hat and owner......) I know this isnt breaking news but I want to post it here anyway. Capt. Gene ONeal got his hat back. Going through some stuff that Ive collected through the years and stumbled upon this WW II vets hat.My wife suggested I post it on Facebook because the person or their family might like it back. I took a picture of the inside of the hat and post it. Later a friend suggested that there was a person with the same name that lives here in town and that he served in the military. I looked up the name in the phonebook and talked to someone there and asked them if there was a person there that served in the military and they said yes and I replied that I might have something of his and they said to come on by. My wife and I get in the car and drive over to the address listed in the phone book and it turns out that he lives very close by. We get out and go knock on his door and Mr. ONeal answers the door and I say that I think I have something that belongs to him. I showed him the hat. He looked at the inside and recognized his hand writing. He wore the hat for a second and teared up. He said he had no idea what happened to this. I told him we probably got it at a garage sale over 20 years ago. He told me thank you, said I could keep it if I wanted, and I told him you earned this, its yours. He smiled and thanked me for finding it, and I thanked him for his service. He said he was originally from Granbury, and retired in 1991. Considering his age I would think he served his entire life in the military.
