At about 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, crews from the Ak-Chin, Maricopa and Thunderbird Farms fire departments responded to a home fire near the intersection of Warren and Fresno roads. Pinal County Sheriffs Office spokesperson Tim Gaffney said the agency could confirm the death of an individual, and though they had leads on who the victim might be based on a conversation with a resident of the home who was not inside at the time the fire broke out, Gaffney declined to name the individual until his remains could be positively identified via dental records. The remains were badly charred. Based on information given to investigators – that the victim was elderly and was recovering from a broken leg – Gaffney said there is no reason to believe the death was anything more than a “tragic accident.” Several space heaters were used to heat the trailer Gaffney said, with the resident not killed in the fire saying the victim would also use “multiple blankets near those heaters.” The double-wide trailer was completely destroyed by the fire. Monitor photographer Howard Waggner said the sound of ammunition exploding in the trailer was ever-present while crews were on scene, taking up a defense posture back at a safe distance from the blaze. Because of the rural area where the home was located, water to fight the blaze was hard to come by and had to be brought in by truck.
