Posted by Muneer NURSING ORDERLY IS DOCTOR FOR 2000 PEOPLE IN TULAIL HEALTH CENTRE Tulail (Gurez): A nursing orderly is ‘looking after’ a population of about 2000 people at Baraub Health Sub-Centre in Tulail area of Gurez, an area in north Kashmir’s Bandipora district devoid of any healthcare facilities. Locals told Greater Kashmir that the orderly attends to 30-35 patients in a single roomed-health center, catering to six hamlets, as the government has failed to provide services of doctor to the residents. The center was established by Army under Operation Sadbhavna and taken over by Health department in 2009. The center caters to hamlets like Parimhal, Angaikot, Dagidar, Malangam. “The center does not only lack in staff, but medicines as well. The only staff available here comprises a nursing orderly and a female multi-purpose health worker who occasionally visits the center,” informed the locals. Although the state government had promised to provide all facilities and services to the center, the promise is yet to be fulfilled. At the time of Health department taking over the center, the Health Minister and local MLA had promised the people that required facilities would be provided within a year, said Ghulam Rasool Lone, former chairman Panchayat Board. Several patients lined up outside the center demanded availability of doctor at least once in a week. “The center lacks almost all basic medical facilities. It exists on papers only and has hardly any public utility,” said Reyaz Ahmed, a local resident. He said the residents have to visit sub-district hospital in Gurez even for minor illness or to check blood pressure. When contacted, Chief Medical Officer Bandipora, Ghulam Muhammad Dar, admitted that there is dearth of staff in SDH Gurez and other health centers. He said the Health Minister was informed about the issue during his visit to the area recently.
