Yea, they made their hearts as an adamant stone, lest they should hear the law, and the words which the Lord of hosts hath sent.... (Zechariah 7:11-12a) Zechariah was a prophet of God that was commissioned to stir the Israelites from their indifference and to encourage them to resume the building of the temple. In this passage, God recalls a former rebuke of the people of Israel for their injustice, lack of mercy and compassion, oppression, and evil in verses 9-10. The Israelites not only failed to obey the correction from the Lord - they absolutely refused to even listen to what He said! In fact, their reaction to Gods warning was like that of an extreme unruly or very rebellious child. Their disrespectful and repulsive body language was consistent with their hearts of stone. Their rebellious attitude was such that they didnt want to as much as even hear what God had to say. God responded to the people by refusing to listen to or answer their prayers and by scattering them and sending them into captivity for 70 years. Do you read the Bible? Do you listen to God-called preachers? Are you sensitive to Gods Word? Do you listen when God speaks to you through His Word and His messengers? Do you believe the Bible? Have you put your faith in Christ? Have you been saved by Gods grace? Or, do you resist the Word of God and Christians who testify of Gods Word? God declares in Romans 10:17, So, then, faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. Lets be like it is written in Psalm 119:33-34: Teach me, O Lord, the way of thy statutes, and I shall keep it into the end. Give me understanding, and I shall keep thy law; yea, I shall observe (obey) it with my whole heart.
