Posted by the Gauteng Dept of Health - For those who require assistive devices: #Health: Assistive devices (wheelchair, walking aid, hearing aid, etc.) Description An assistive device is any gadget or technology that people with disabilities can use to help them function better. The most common of these are wheelchairs, walking aids and hearing aids. There are many different assistive devices that can be used by people with different disabilities. The department supply these devices to people that need them. Steps to follow If you are a new patient, the hospital where you were treated will refer you to a rehabilitation professional to assess, prescribe and fit your assistive device. If you have an old disability you can go to your nearest clinic or community health centre to refer you to the rehabilitation service. Legal framework This service is provided in terms of Article 90 (I)(L) of the National Health Act, 2003 (Act 61 of 2003). Service standard You will wait an average of four weeks to receive your assistive device, depending on the type of device and how far you are from the city where they make the device. If you receive an assistive device it is your responsibility to take good care of it and prevent it from breaking. When you no longer need the device, you must return it to the facility that gave it to you. Cost Clients who cannot afford it will get their device free of charge from State facilities. All other clients will have to pay a fee in terms of the Uniform Patient Fees Schedule. Forms to complete The rehabilitation professional will complete the form on your behalf. You will have to show a form of identification such as your green ID document or a birth certificate.
