Posting from the President About once a year we host a dinner - TopicsExpress

Posting from the President About once a year we host a dinner meeting for principals from all elementary schools in the Lunches for Learning program. We discuss progress/modifications within the L4L program and we discuss items of interest to the school principals. We hosted such a meeting during my recent July visit. I explained that L4L has been providing the lunch program for 9 years and it is time we demonstrate results. I asked if each school principal would write a one-page critique of a Success Story that would not have happened without the L4L program. The success stories tumbled out! It was as if the principals had been waiting to be asked! We have started to post these success stories and will continue. These Success Stories fall into 3 general categories: • Children who could continue in school because they didn’t have to search for food, have graduated from 6th grade, and are now supporting themselves. • Children who seldom came to school because they were so sickly from malnutrition, became healthy and finished school. They have, subsequently, found employment. • Very young children who were sent to sit in on kindergarten because there was a meal. These children are now healthy, energetic, alert students progressing through elementary school. I knew, from years of observations, that children could and would stay in school if a meal were provided and that these children would find gainful employment; and this has happened. I did not realize how many children were simply too sickly and dropped out of school because of poor health, I also did not realize just how important the L4L program is to very young children within these communities; how big an impact L4L has on the community beyond the elementary school. As these Success Stories are posted, please take a few minutes to read and reflect upon how harsh the world can be and what a great impact we can have.
