Poverty is on my mind: The Social Security Advisory Committee - TopicsExpress

Poverty is on my mind: The Social Security Advisory Committee states unequivocally:In relation to the impact of reforms on poverty rates, the Institute for Fiscal Studies has predicted rising levels of both absolute and relative poverty in the UK between 2010 and 2020.54 The report finds that, the overall impact of the Government’s changes to personal tax and Social Security will be to significantly increase levels of poverty: by 600,000 in 2020-21 using a relative poverty measure; and one million using an absolute measure. Reforms introduced since the publication of the report have further reduced the uprating of benefits and tax credits, meaning these estimates are likely to be conservative. What can the next government do to reverse this trend in increasing poverty for the people of Britain? That is the question.
