Poverty reduction – Budget allocation land grabbing issues ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ The Work Committee for Rural Development and Poverty reduction held its meeting at the Presidential Office in NPT, yesterday with an address by Chairman of the Committee, Vice President U Nyan Tun. In his address, the Vice President said that the rural development strategic plan has been drafted to reduce the poverty rate of the nation to 16% in 2015 through participation of all stakeholders and the good governance process by enhancing the capacity of rural. Poverty reduction can be achieved by implementing the eight rural development tasks and can be reduced effectively through increasing incomes of rural people. The Vice President pointed out that the rural development tasks demand huge financial resources. The capital of the rural people must be increased through financial resources such as the budget allocation of the government, contribution of development organization, cash donated by individuals and private investment and other social welfare tasks. He also said that the land utilization management central committee and state/region, district and township level committees have been formed to tackle the land confiscation issues but there are still complaints concerning this issue. In conclusion, the Vice President urged officials to implement land grabbing issues effectively and quickly as farmland is essential for rural people who have to rely on farmland for their livelihood. Officials also reported on progress of tasks being carried out for rural development, poverty reduction and future plans.
