Powerful. And you wonder why African Americans in this country are fed up and angry. Our speaking out and speaking up isnt about recent injustices, there is a historical context to our outrage at the Michael Browns situations occurring all over this country. Taney, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court who heard Dred Scott v. Sandford wrote the opinion of the Court and stated that blacks as beings of an inferior order, and altogether unfit to associate with the white race, either in social or political relations, and so far inferior that they had no rights which the white man was bound to respect. Almost 160 years after Dred Scott, it is clear that the black man still has no rights which the white man is bound to respect, even when their hands are raised in an act of surrender Please understand, my outrage is not at white persons individually, as there are several of my white brethren who are marching along side the people of Ferguson. My outrage is at a society that unapologetically accepts the notion that what happened in Ferguson is justified simply because Mike Brown is black and he had the audacity to refuse the instruction of a police officer- when he and his friend were simply walking down the street. My anger is at systemic racism that supports a chief of police releasing an irrelevant video tape of someone who appears to be mike brown being the aggressive black man, while in the same breath releasing the name of the shooting officer and remarking at what a gentle and kind police officer he is - an unintentional message? I think not. My disdain is for those folks who have come to protest in favor of Wilson, applauding his efforts in executing a child in the middle of the street and reportedly taking up monies to reward him for his acts. My tears are for my nephews, my godson, my friends sons, who can never live in a world where they are judged first by their character, but rather will be viewed as a threat and as someone to fear simply because of the color of their skin.
