Powerful video address by Kristalina Georgieva, EU Commissioner for International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Control, on the occasion of World Humanitarian Day. She speaks about the increasing personal security risks that humanitarian workers are exposed to more and more. Yet thousands of humanitarian workers leave the saftey and comfort of their homes and families time and time again to be on the front line of the response to human suffering, not because they HAVE to, not because they get PAID to do so, but simply because they believe it is the right thing to do... in spite of many armchair critics who claim from the comfort of their homes and not hindered by any knowledge, that the humanitarian system is corrupted and that humanitarian relief does not work. Today I honour and salute those thousands of women and men who roll up their sleeves each day to help out where humans are suffering, regardless of the personal risks they take to do so.
