Ppl are simply mostly curious. and —maybe at time, when its so repetitive that it becomes annoying— one might go all the way and just answering that question with the same question to the asker, to give them a sense of how it feels. As soon as i speak i get asked this question all the time too. Ppl are still very attached to ideas of ethnicities belonging to a place. I saw an asian-looking guy this morning in the subway with a hat with the word IRISH on it and i thought this was a great way for him to illustrate this point. ...However, ppl usually ask me where are you from? since they can clearly decipher I wasnt raised here from my accent, and not a crude WHAT are you? which sound rather objectifying or strange at best.
