Pratts Department store ( part of John Lewis) was the largest retailer in Streatham by far and people travelled from miles away to visit it. Most of the other retailers in the high road feed off of Pratts, and the high road was constantly busy. It was on 5 floors including the basement. As Streatham became more and more congested, one of the stories was that they asked Lambeth Council for planning permission to put a car park in and they were refused. This was one of the reasons for leaving Streatham. They swiftly closed the store and sold the site in no time at all and the store was demolished. When they left in the late 1980s Streatham instantly became a ghost town for shopping, and still hasnt really recovered. The site is where Lidi and argos now stand.
