Prayer and the Word Acts 6:4 “But we will give ourselves continually to prayer and the ministry of the Word.” (NKJV) June 10, 2013 Do You Have Hope in the Midst of Trouble? Scripture Reading of the Day: Job 6:8 – 13 Scripture Verse of the Day: Job 6:11 – “What strength do I have, that I should hope? And what is my end, that I should prolong my life? Job has lost everything except for his wife. His friends come by to give him words of wisdom for his present situation. I have always thought with friends like that who needs enemies. Eliphaz has just finished telling Job that he has sinned and that was why he was experiencing all the problems in his life. Hind sight is great stuff because we know that wasn’t the care, but at the time Job or his friends knew the real reason Job faced serious problems in his life. Job tries to answer Eliphaz and tell him that he has not sinned. Because of all that has happened to him, Job would like to die and die now. In verse eleven Job asks two questions which deal with the things he is facing in his life. The first question Job asks is, “What strength do I have, that I should hope?” Job had no hope in the future at this point in his life. Solomon says in Proverbs 13:12a these words, “Hope deferred make the heart sick…” This is the point that Job was at in his life. David says in Psalm 39:7, “And now, Lord, what do I wait for? My hope is in You.” Job had not learned this in his life at this time, but he needed to learn this lesson. When things go wrong in our lives, and we don’t see answers, we still need to hope in the Lord because He sees all things, knows all things, and will undertake on our behalf if we just trust in Him. David says again in Psalm 27:1, “The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?” When Job realizes this fact, his life is restored again. Jobs second question is, “And what is my end, that I should prolong my life?” Job’s second question is an outgrowth of having no hope. He could see no reason for living any longer. His friends were not really helping at this point. When we are seeking to give advice, helping, or trying to guide someone through a difficult time in their lives, we need to ask the Lord for grace to help the person in the keeping with God’s will and God’s purpose. God wants His people to have hope in the midst of any kind of trouble in our lives. Prayer: Lord, help me to hope in you in the midst of life’s trouble.
