Pre Conversation Don Beckwith Couldnt see the video, damn lawyers again, cc ....Youre right Malmo, always the statustition, damn it ... The mile wasnt exactly Pres distance, though. But, Marty was a great talent, sub-4 minute HS Miler, and ran pretty well over 3 miles, as well. Had the pleasure of running w/him a bit w/Florida track Club in Gainesville, when I attempted to leave Oregon to transfer after my freshman year, 4:04 Mile and 3:42 for meters@ age 18. Dellinger offered me only two terms of tuition, Jimmy Carnes wasnt interested either? So, back to Oregon ... You have a fantastic memory, grasp on statistics ... regarding Track and Field, X-County, But I wonder if you miss the art, allure, soul, of the athlete, of the sport sometimes George? JUST saying. That was the essence of Pre and why he affected sooooooo many, in such a positive way. You are always the great competitor, its in your DNA. Thanks though for the delightful, insightful and historic postings thatre great. Yesterday at 3:26pm · Like George Malley Don, to drink and drive is to sacrifice the gift. I wish you guys in the Prefontaine Exploitation Industrial Complex would quit beating a dead horse. Holy mixed metaphors Batman! Yesterday at 5:03pm · Like George Malley Don, I didnt miss the art (yuck), allure and soul of the athlete... I lived it. The entire deification of Pre is creepy. He was just a fast runner. Yesterday at 5:07pm · Like Donald Beckwith No George, you didnt have the pleasure of really getting to know Pre who was a great individual and person, as well as a great competitor. He made a huge mistake and paid with his life. Quite the price to pay. We all do some pretty stupid things, even at his age. No excuse for drinking and driving, but he paid the piper. Yesterday at 6:00pm · Like George Malley Don, a mistake is something that you didnt intend to do. Pre was an habitual drunk drivepr, and an habitual reckless driver. His tragic death wasnt an accident, it was an inevitability. Unfortunately for his family and friends the consequences Yesterday at 8:27pm · Like George Malley were not good. But for every drunk driver who permanently self-cancels his driving priviledges permanently the roads become that much safer for the rest of us. Yesterday at 8:29pm · Like George Malley damn editing. Yesterday at 8:33pm · Like Donald Beckwith All right, George, Im still gonna post creepy-positive comments, about Pre, with all his faults... for he accomplished quite a lot, many positive things, affected/and still inspires a whole large population in his short years. I think I may have k...See More 13 hours ago · Like George Malley RIP has always been the appropriate response. The creepy resurrection and crass commercialization of Pre is not. East Coast/West Coast? You been watching too many rap movies, Son. Youre projecting. Lets face it, Oregon is known for their rabid provincialism. ...See More 7 hours ago · Like Scott Krause Drunk, yes. Have a lot of us done it, yes. Were we young and stupid, yes. Was Pre a habitual Drunk? Maybe, but who are we to decide. Ive seen a lot of world class athletes that drank a lot . Today is probably no different. and who are we to decide anyway? How many Americans have done what Pre did as a runner? In my mind, none. Is he an icon, most certainly. Is this a case of crass commercialization or Prefontaine explotation? Maybe! Who today remembers Liquori, Ryun, Shorter, Mills etc. Sadly, very few outside the sport. many remember PRE. Whether you like it or not, Pre was and still is Americas greatest distance runner. He is an icon, just like John Wayne, Marilyn Monroe, Elvis and James Dean. and no matter how hard any one attempts to justify knocking Steve Prefontaines athletic greatness and memory, it simply cant be done!
