Pre-conference workshop Regenerative Agriculture by Cody Holmes will be held on January 22 in Aberdeen. The idea of grazing only one species of animal, buying and applying salt chemical fertilizer, large pastures with continuous grazing, and feeding large quantities of stored forages is a good recipe for losses of income in the ranching business. I know this because this is what I tried first, for 30 years. Then I began learning about how the critters in the soil could prepare the situation to produce more forage than I would need without spending much of anything to get it done. Once this new but old system allowed me to double my cow herd I realized there were some types of forages now growing that the cows could not eat all of. So we began bringing in animals that could eat those forages, then another species and then another. In just a few years not only had we more than doubled the cow herd but we were grazing as many other animal species as the cow herd and then some.
