Premier Weatherill has announced that he broadly supports Andrew Forrests recommendations for a cashless welfare system - in short, income management. These reforms are being specifically targeted at Indigenous communitiesa. Weve long been vocal about our distaste for compulsory income management programs. All the evidence says theyre expensive to implement, they leave recipients open to discrimination and stigma, and involuntary schemes just flat-out dont work in many cases. What do you all think? Can income management help support vulnerable communities as the Premier has stated, or does it deny people dignity and leave them open to discrimination?
