Prepperbabe challenged me to prepare an emergency food supply on - TopicsExpress

Prepperbabe challenged me to prepare an emergency food supply on $20, and I have gladly accepted! I am new to the world of prepping and on a fixed income. I have spent hours collecting ideas and am excited to try this!!! I know theres hundreds of ways to do this and I want to explore as many as possible, but please bare with me. I may not do things the way you do due to physical disabilities, or lack of equipment. To get started, I first thought about my shopping habits and how I could change them, without shorting my family and realized, Duh! Food needs to be rotated, so we should be eating on, and continually replacing our supply (I take a lot of meds and dont always think clearly, lol). I then gathered up some potential recipes and made a grocery list. I decided to assume that MOST folks have: *Flour, sugar and salt *Basic cooking supplies and a stove (I bought a little propane burner from Amazon for under $10) *Water source/supply My methods may not be the healthiest, but 1.) Im on a budget! And 2.) I am learning and growing! I also look foward for your POSITIVE comments/feedback!~Best regards, Christy, owner of Prepping On A Disability Check (facebook/brokegirldoes) November Shopping List (recipes to follow!) This month, I utilized Wal-Mart (A huge thanks to my Grocery IQ app for this!): Great Value Onion Flakes $0.64 Great Value Parsely $1.46 Salt & Pepper shaker set $1.26 (I didnt assume you pepper and mine needed replaced...yes, I do have a larger salt supply) Nestle Cocoa Powder, 8 oz $2.42 Great Value Instant Potatoes, 15.3 oz $2.68 Great Value 25.6 oz Powdered Milk $7.78 ( yes, I know, gross! But will give you recipes!) BONUS SPLURGE: 80 oz jar of Vlasic pickles spears $3.86. My youngest is a pickle hound, and to me, the reusable jar was too good to pass up!!!! GRAND TOTAL: $22.68 (Ill shave a corner next month as I didnt feel like putting anything back) RECIPES: Potato Soup Mix (I would double/triple this) 1 3/4 cup instant potatoes 1 1/2 cup instant milk 2 tsp chicken granules 2 tsp dried onion flakes 1/2 tsp parsely Mix all ingredients, store in jar (or whatever food safe container you have). To make, add 1/4 cup mix to 1 cup boiling water. Hot Chocolate Mix (I chose this because winters on its way!!!) 3 cups powdered milk 1/2 cup cocoa 3/4 cup sugar or sweetener (I use stevia aka Truvia) Dash of salt Sift all ingredients together and store in jar (or whatever food safe container you have). To make, add 4 tbs to 1 cup boiling water or coffee (this is what I do instead of paying $3 for a cappuccino somewhere!) I know youre wondering, Wheres the meat? I will get to that!!!! Tips: Find yourself with just enough cereal left to be a tease and hate to toss the contents of? Start saving it in a large container. Ill tell you more next time! Dont toss your old fingernail polish! Use a different color for each month and color code your food supply so you know when you purchased (or made it). Labeling is important BUT labels can fall off or get wet and become illegible! Make a couple of master charts to keep in your emergency bags so you wont have to guess!
