Prescient: Orwell & Tito. British writer George Orwell, back in 1942 before the advent of SFRJ, clearly understood the foundation that would underpin most societiess elites, especially those in Eastern Europe and the communist bloc, including Titos Yugoslavia (1945-91). In essence he was following on from another British writer Rudyard Kipling, in saying that for Yugoslavias elite to be able to come across as civilised (kulturni), well spoken, educated and enjoy privileges, there were men, namely from the intelligence services, UDBa (SDB) and KOS, who did the dirty work, so that Yugoslav artists such as playwrite Naum Panovski, as an example, could enjoy those privileges. Its interesting that many of the elite never complained about the imprisonment of dissidents, the surveillance, the invasion of privacy, the torture, the use of unsavoury characters as informers such as pedophile priest Vasilje Kačavenda. Post 1991 these people have now shamelessly transformed themselves into human rights activists. ------------- -George Orwell, 1942: Rudyard Kiplings grasp of function, of who protects whom, is very sound. He sees clearly that men can be highly civilised only while other men, inevitably less civilized, are there to guard and feed them. As George Orwell pointed out, people sleep peacefully in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf. quote by Richard Grenier, 1993. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Orwell .
