Presevo Valley Albanians cease talks with the Serbian government Presevo (AIP), 23 November – The Preshevo Valley Albanians have decided to cease the talks with the Serbian government, this recent development was today confirmed to the news agency “Presheva Jone” by MP Riza Halimi and Jonuz Musliu, chairman of the Assembly of Bujanovac and former UCPMB political director. Preshevo Valley’s political leaders reached this unanimous decision today. Halimi: “Serbia’s games with the Preshevo Valley Albanians have come to an end.” According to MP Riza Halimi, the reason for this decision is the ongoing discriminatory policies and ignorance of the Serbian government regarding the Preshevo Valley’s legitimate demands. Riza Halimi, the only Albanian parliamentarian in the Serbian Parliament (elected by the Albanian Coalition of Preshevo Valley) stated to the news agency Presheva Jone: ” Serbia’s games with the Preshevo Valley Albanians have come to an end, since the Serbian government and Assembly are becoming deaf to the Albanian minority’s demands. They have not accepted any of the five amendments presented amongst others related to the decentralization of courts and prosecutors.” According to Mr. Halimi, with the current Serbian laws, Preshevo is without a court and prosecutors because the Serbian government only recognizes “1,000” Albanians with the latest official census. Ragmi Mustafa, Preshevo mayor, explains today’s decision with false and empty promises by the Serbian Ministry of Health that has not kept their promises. Mr. Galip Beqiri, Head of KKSH, also expressed himself in a similar tone: “following the violent removal of the UCPMB monument and the seizure of Albanian primary school books by Serbian police at the “Zejnel Hajdini” school and the death of Reshat Bajramit in a Serbian prison, all of this has resulted in the height of discrimination. We don’t see any reason to continue the negotiations, when the Belgrade regime continues its discriminatory policies without intending to change its course.” Jonuz Musliu, Head of the Bujanovac Assembly and former UCPBM political director, says to Presheva Jone: “The reason for this boycott is due to the Serbian government’s lies and false promises, which has kept the situation in the Preshevo Valley neither in peace nor in war.” According to Mr. Musliu, other reasons for the boycott, is the brutal removal of the UCPMB monument in Preshevo and seizure of Albanian textbooks in Rajince, the installment of a monument hailing Serbian paramilitaries in the village of Lučane in Bujanovac and the return of dead Albanians from Serbian prisons, the same methods used during the Milosevic era when Albanian mothers were explained that their sons committed suicide while serving in the Serbian Army.” According to Albanian political leaders in the Preshevo Valley, talks with the Serbian side started with OSCE’s assistance. Until now, their seven points plan has remained only on paper, because none of the Belgrade government’s promises have been realized so far, bearing in mind that the situation in the Preshevo Valley still remains fragile. In fact, the news agency “Presheva Jane” had earlier reported about the dialogue difficulties between the parties, and anticipating the end of the talks with the news article “The Sky Opens in Preshevo – Albanian political leaders can claim whatever rights and privileges they want until June 28.” It was claimed that Serbia was mobilized with promises and visits in the region pretending that the government wanted to advance the situation in Preshevo, Bujanovac and Medvegja. However, these activities were only intended to get the green light from the European Union. Serbia did receive the “go ahead” to negotiate their entry with discriminated Preshevo Valley Albanians.
