Presidency 2015: Avoid Discrimination Against All Aspirants but - TopicsExpress

Presidency 2015: Avoid Discrimination Against All Aspirants but Focus on Voters Power I enjoyed listening to a radio program this morning around Abuja, and one of the issues is whether President Jonathan should seek for a second tenure or not. The debate seem to be equally divided as some supported while others were against. However, the missing point seem to be the idea of mixing up seeking re-election with winning the election. Many people have come to accept that seeking an elective position means winning the election. This is not true as we have seen many sitting leaders lose elections to their opponents. I stand on the constitutional provision that a sitting President has the right to seek re-election and this is not limited to Jonathan alone and should be applicable to future Presidents of the country. It has been so even in the past as enjoyed by Shehu Shagari and Olusegun Obasanjo. If we focus on preventing the President from contesting in 2015, we are setting a wrong foundation for the future. I think that the real power of Nigerians is not in preventing President Jonathan from seeking a re-election in 2015 but in refusing to vote for him as a candidate if they do not want him. He has the right to contest the Presidential election but Nigerians have the right not to vote for him if they are not satisfied with his performance. To insist that he must not contest means that his rights as a citizen is being denied and this can happen to anyone else. I think that it will be good for us to focus on what is our right and not what is wrong to do. President Jonathan has the right to contest the Presidential election in 2015 but no one can assure today if he will win or not as other contestants have equal chances of winning too. Those who want a shift of power from North to South, East to West should do their home work of mobilizing Nigerians for their candidates for 2015 and not to focus on preventing anyone interested in Presidency from contesting
