Presidency college or Presidency jail? The authorities seem to be - TopicsExpress

Presidency college or Presidency jail? The authorities seem to be functioning as jail-supers or jail-wardens. Every now and then they are coming up with rules and regulations, restrictions curbing the freedom of the students. A university is not a concentration camp where one is dealing with a bunch of convicts. It is an abode of learning where free spirit and free will of the individual should reign supreme. Have the VC and the Registrar ever been to a western university? If so, have they not noticed the free spirit pervading the campus? Of course, what else can one expect from the educational institutes of a TMC run state. The dictatorship of the Lumpents prevalent in the political, social and cultural arena of the state has systematically degenerated the educational atmosphere too. Jadavpur university was the first laboratory of their semi-literate endeavours at political domination, where they insist with a VC, who has been asked by 97% students and professors to get lost. Now it seems the turn of the Presidency university, where the hand-picked henchmen of the education minister are slowly but surely strangulating the freedom of the students, their free movements, their democratic right to dissent, shout slogans, write graffitis etc. Like the Jadavpur VC, they are treating the students as their servile subordinates and not their equals, treating them not with love and care and sympathy. Do they think they will ever equal the worth and merits, the brilliance and erudition of the Presidentians with their sub-standard academic qualifications or worse, their non-academic allegiance the ruling harmads of the TMC? Presidency has been the birthplace of Satyen Boses, Jagadishchandras, P.C.Roys, Mahalanavishes, Amartya Sens to name only a few. The present students have also the potential to make the college and the country proud. Who remembers the VCs or the Registrars of this premier institution? None. Like Jadavpur, Presidency has till now prevented the TMCP from opening their account. Is that what is bothering the education minister and his VCs and Registrars? Why cant they leave these two premier institutions alone? As it is, higher education, in fact all education is anathema to the TMC. They are more adept at thrashing professors, demanding the right to copy during exams, beating invigilators and pouncing upon students not belonging to their union. Throughout the state they are resorting to these authoritarian practices under the able leadership of Shankudev Panda and the blessings of a tolerant education minister. These unstoppable rowdies have long forfeited their right to be called students. Are the authorities of Jadavpur and Presidency also bent upon relinquishing their responsibilities as educationists and earning the unsavory epithet of chamchas of the rulers?
