President Barack Obama said today that a proposed referendum for Crimea to join Russia would violate the Ukrainian Constitution and international law. Obama said he is confident that the international community is moving forward together in responding to the crisis in Ukraine. Speaking moments after Obama, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry told reporters that he talked to Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, and the two have agreed to continue talking over the course of the next hours, the next days to try to find a political solution to end the crisis in Ukraine. As you have heard me say all week, the choices that Russia has made escalated this situation, and we believe Russia has the opportunity now ... to de-escalate, Kerry said. The U.S. House of Representatives overwhelmingly approved a financial aid package for Ukraine, authorizing up to $1 billion in loan guarantees. U.S. President Barack Obama and Russian President Vladimir Putin talked for an hour Thursday about the crisis in Ukraine, according to the White House. Obama conveyed the U.S. position to his Russian counterpart, including that there is a way to resolve the situation diplomatically, according to the White House statement. As a part of that resolution, the governments of Ukraine and Russia would hold direct talks, facilitated by the international community. ~ CNN
