Loterte Tuesday 2nd of July 2013 TweetFacebookYahooEmailShareThis LEGAZPI CITY, July 2 (PIA) -- Governor Joey Sarte Salceda of Albay was conferred on June 28 the Saringaya Award given out by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Bicol as part of Environment Month celebration. The award cites exemplary programs, projects and initiatives individuals, institutions, the academe and local government units in the field of environmental care. “Salceda is accorded with the Saringaya Award for his brilliance in transforming the Albay into what is now a distinguished disaster risk reduction and management institution and learning center, for establishing the Climate Change Adaptation Academy, for championing the Integrated Ecosystems Management in Albay and the creation of the Bicol River Basin Management Special Committee at the Regional Development Council (RDC),” DENR Bicol regional executive director Gilbert Gonzales said. Gonzales said Salceda had implemented extensive environmental initiatives as Albay governor and RDC Bicol chair. “DENR and the provincial government have been partners in many initiatives aiming at the sustainable upkeep of the environment, so it is just as fitting to confer the good governor his special award in time for the closing of the month-long celebration,” Gonzales added. DENR Bicol over the years has named a total of 89 individuals and entities to the Saringaya Awards program. Saringaya is a Bicol term for abundance of growth, lush, and healthy environment teeming with green trees and mountains ideal for biodiversity and well balance ecosystem. Others conferred with the Saringaya plaque of recognition with the governor were Bolos Elementary School in Irosin, Sorsogon, headed by Maria Ines P. Galon, Head Teacher II (Elementary Level) for which the school has established a vegetable garden using indigenous and recycled materials and help raise the environmental awareness of the community to adopt the same project in their households. Magallanes National Vocational High School in Magallanes, also in Sorsogon, led by Harrietta A. Mirasol, Principal I capped the Secondary Level category that initiated the establishment of a mangrove plantation that steered the community members’ interest and participation in the upkeep of their coastline and in watershed adaptation -- all of which were duly supported by the local government units and non-governmental organizations, thereby strengthening their collective environmental advocacy. Universidad de Sta. Isabel in Naga City, under the leadership of Sr. Lourdes Albis, university president notched the Tertiary Level category for carrying out programs that educate students and the public on environmental concerns, especially in the aspect of waste management from within and from outside the campus, that help address pressing environmental problems. In the Industry Category, Bacman Geothermal, Inc. in Bacon District of Sorsogon CIty, led by Engr. Ireneo D. Itoses, plant manager, was strongly considered for its exemplary greening legacy, the BINHI Project, its being a willing host of the Adopt-A-WildLife Species Program of the DENR, its participation in the development and management of a 450-hectare watershed area together with the local government government Unit of Castilla, Sorsogon, and for involving itself in the provincial multi–sectoral forest protection committee of the province of Sorsogon. For Local Government Unit Category, the award was given to Sta. Magdalena, Sorsogon, headed by Mayor Alejandro Gamos, municipal mayor, considered for being an exemplary LGU when it created its own Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office and Municipal Waste Management Board, for the re-establishment of materials recovery facilities in clustered barangays, and for the successful implementation of eco-friendly home and community program. The municipality has also pioneered the successful co–management with the private sector in the conservation of small watersheds to sustain the domestic needs of the communities. The awardees were chosen by a technical working committee, regional technical director Pobleo M. Florece of the Ecosystem Research and Development Service of DENR Bicol, based on their meritorious accomplishments and impact to the community. The selection committee has decided to give special recognition to the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office of Sorsogon LGU, Albay Park and Wildlife and Bicol Scuba Divers’ Foundation Inc.
