Presidents’ Day Squashed A bill that was passed by the House of Representative setting a special day for the commemoration of ‘All President’s Day’ in Liberia was yesterday squashed by the senate following the adoption of an ad-hoc committee’s report. The act which provides for a special day to be set aside in observance of the natal days of all past and president Liberian presidents was passed at the Lower House some months ago. It also discourages the two special holidays observed in the country for the birth anniversaries of President William V. S. Tubman and President Joseph J. Robert, thereby blending them as a single holiday for all Presidents. But a Senate ad hoc committee that perused the bill states that late President Tubman contributed immensely to the country through his Open Door Policy and other initiatives that helped to unite Liberians and Africans through his pioneering role in the establishment of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) now the African Union (AU). “Therefore an act that is set to erase their memory is ill-historical. “In view of that, the ad-hoc committee recommends that the proposed bill be rejected,” a segment of the Ad-hoc committee report reads. Upon reading the report, the senators endorsed it through an overwhelming vote. ---Boima J. V. Boima
