Press Release - 12th March 2014 CYCLING LEGEND SEAN KELLY LAUNCHES ‘THE KIERAN MACMAHON MEMORIAL CLASSIC’ - 22ND JUNE 2014 The south-east Clare village of Clonlara will host the first Kieran MacMahon memorial classic to take place on the roads of the banner county this June. Irish cycling legend Sean Kelly was on hand this week to launch the event, which includes 3 races to involve all categories of senior Irish road racing cyclists. The race course will run from Kieran MacMahon’s home village of Clonlara over a distance of 150 kilometers, and has been selected to be a serious challenge to all but the strongest riders. Kieran was an elite cyclist of national standing for 5 years prior to his tragic death in 2004. To mark the 10th anniversary of Kieran’s death, his family and his friends within the cycling community in Ireland are staging the event to commemorate his enormous contribution to, and love for, the sport of cycling. Race Organiser Brian MacMahon said “Kieran loved cycling, and spent much of his life racing competitively throughout Ireland and across the world. We’re delighted to be able to bring this event to his home county for competitors and spectators alike” Race director Cian Lynch said “The race is strategically placed on the national calendar ahead of the national Championships with a view to attracting the very top domestic and international racing cyclists”. This event is taking place with the support of Cycle 4 Sick Children (C4SC), a Limerick cycling club whose aim is to help to raise funds and promote awareness in helping kids with severe neuro disabilities kieranmacmahonclassic/
