Press Release | Monday, May 12 Galloway slates Home Office in letter to Theresa May Bradford MP George Galloway has launched a bitter criticism of the Home Office response - or lack of it - over the incursions into mosques by the far-right Britain First. Speaking after touring three of the mosques which were attacked on Saturday, Galloway said: It was first with dismay, then incredulity and finally anger that I learned that more than 48 hours after these jackbooted thugs had burst in on worshippers to desecrate holy places there has been absolutely no contact with any of the imams or members of the local Council for Mosques by the Home Office. It is unconscionable that there has not been a word of condemnation or sympathy from the Home Secretary and her department. Theresa May should have been on the first train to Bradford trailing officials and reassuring the Muslim community that not only would the perpetrators be punished but that she would ensure that an outrage like this never occurs again. Instead? A stony silence. I have written to the Home Secretary slating her failure, and that of her department, in dealing with this and calling on her to urgently come to grips with it. He went on: Britain FIrst has been given status as a political party and is standing candidates in council and European elections, rather than being proscribed for what it is, a racist, neo-fascist gang of fanatics. Several extreme Muslim organisations have been proscribed for flimsier reasons. So I am calling on her to consider banning Britain First. And the national media has been ominously silent too. Can you imagine what it would have been like if two carloads of Muslim extremists in military uniforms had invaded churches, forced the Quran on people and distributed leaflets that claimed white society was a breeding ground for paedophiles, citing Jimmy Savile and the convictions of Stuart Hall and Max Clifford as proof? There would have been national outrage, and rightly. But when it happens to Muslims they avert their gaze, pass on the other side. There was a fomented furore about halal meat but here we are three days on and I have yet to see a line about it in a national newspaper or a word from the lips of a national newsreader or reporter. The MP visited the three mosques on Monday afternoon and evening and heard first-hand reports from witnesses about the 10 members of the militaristic Britain First who had burst in and terrorised worshippers. Fortunately in one of the mosques, where there were had been over 400 people, prayers had finished shortly before. There were about 150 young men there. Can you imagine what might have happened? I talked to old men now living in fear of these knuckledraggers returning. And that is something this rancid outfit are claiming they will do. They have also threatened me. No doubt these racist thugs are feeling pleased with themselves. Theyve posted dozens of pictures of themselves online, glorying in their despicable actions, Galloway continued. Fortunately the West Yorkshire police are taking the incident seriously, but I have to say that if it had been Muslims doing this they would be behind bars now. Galloway added that Britain First also had a military academy where members were being trained in unarmed combat. Muslims would be locked up under the terrorism acts, he concluded.
