Press Release Moniaive Festival Village Information Event A ‘drop-in’ event is being held to enable people living in and around Moniaive to find out more about a new initiative designed to support community life and strengthen the economy in Glencairn. Plans for the Moniaive Festival Village project are at a very early stage, and organisers want to find out now what local people think and to hear their ideas. The drop-in session will be held on Wednesday 14th January in Glencairn Memorial Institute in Moniaive between 2.00pm and 8.00pm. “Moniaive is a wonderfully creative place”, says Peter Roberts, one of the people behind the project. “There is a wealth of artistic talent living in and around the village, and it has a great reputation for its annual festivals and community events, like the Folk and Bluegrass Festivals, the Gala and the Flower Show. But we don’t think we are yet making the most of all this activity for the benefit of the community as a whole and for local businesses. “Moniaive has enviable facilities and is a great place to live. Our festivals and events play an important part; we reckon they contribute around £80-100,000 of additional spending in the local economy. We think this can be increased, and the range of arts activities can also be expanded to provide opportunities for wider community involvement.” For the first time organisers from the main festivals, artists, businesses and community representatives are working together to develop a proper plan for developing the arts in Moniaive for social and economic benefit, under the banner of ‘Moniaive Festival Village’. The first step is the preparation of an application for a Creative Place Award to be submitted to Creative Scotland in February. “This will put us in competition with other places”, says Peter, “and there will only be one winner. But if we are successful it will bring £50,000 into Moniaive to carry out our plans. Even if we are only shortlisted it will be a great step forward. So it’s really worth having your say – come and tell us what you think next Wednesday. Peter Roberts, 07/01/15 peter.edendays@gmail
